The quantitative study is part of the research VEGA 1/0562/13 and is focused on the detailed analysis of the motivation why novice students choose to be a teacher. Participants were 150 full-time students at the Faculty of Education, Comenius University in Bratislava. The author assumed differences between teacher competences and personal characteristics of students studying teaching based on their field of study and due to their motivation to become a teacher. Novice students filled out a questionnaire (BIP Bochum's inventory of professional personality characteristics), range of social and psychological competencies of teachers (TSPCS) and Questionnaire of motivation to study primary or secondary education. The results show very high engagement cohort of novice students with developed social and psychological competencies mainly by female students who have completed high school of pedagogy. Statistically significant differences also appeared in the type of motivation among students for primary and pre-primary education and students in secondary education.
